Kári was born and raised in Skagafjörður, which does not prevent him from discovering constantly new places and taking the most his region has to offer!
In which area of Skagafjördur do you live?
The West side! I was born in Sauðárkrókur and now live there with my wife and our two sons, Þröstur (21yo) and Viktor (13yo). We also have a daughter, Thelma (22yo), who is studying in Akureyri.
What are you doing for a living ?
I have been working for Hólar University for the past three and a half years as a technician within Verið lab. We run all kind of experiments there both in fish biology and aquaculture. My role there is wide but it goes from monitoring the station to providing field assistance, and doing a little bit of human resources as well, by ensuring a fulfilling working environment for everyone.
How do you spend your free time in Wintertime and Summertime, and which season do you prefer?
I guess I prefer Summer as there are more things to do, and more sun. I spend my time hiking, motorcycling, sailing, and more importantly, being with my friends. The most precious thing is being able to share these moments with the ones I love. Both of my sons are into motorcycling, and the youngest one just goes with me everywhere, from sailing to kayaking, he is eager to try everything!
With two friends, we also run the local Sailing Club from June to September. We welcome mostly 10yo kids but it is open to everyone willing to try. Bachelor and bachelorette parties, for instance, got quite popular recently!
In Wintertime, the lack of daylight makes you feel a little out of battery, then it is the right time to do sports. I usually go to the gym when I am not out in the mountains snowmobiling with friends or spending time with family. But this year hasn’t brought yet the good powder we are waiting for!
What makes Skagafjördur so unique for you ?
Beside being born and raised here, I would say I am close to everything I love: family, friends, landscapes, outdoor activities, all in one place. From our house, we are 5 minutes far from the sea, 10 minutes from the mountains, and the motorcycle makes it possible to go anywhere just from my garage! Also, Sauðárkrókur has this very central location, 1 hour from Akureyri, 3 hours from Reykjavik…
All these things keep me here, I could have left when I was young but I am very happy I did not. There is no place I’d rather go.
What is your most memorable moment here?
Beside the good days spent in nature with people, this is with no doubt the birth of my three kids.
